The recipients for this year's Hoops for Hope event are the following families. Please read their story and help support our families in any way!!!
Darla Williams (Mrs. Williams) family
In late February, Mrs. Williams had a severe fall in her house and was immediately admitted to the hospital. During this hospital stay, it was revealed that she had degenerative disc disease, thus causing sciatic nerve damage. After a few days in the hospital, she was sent home for physical therapy and time off to recuperate. She missed several weeks of school. During this time, her husband, Steve, suffered a major stroke. While in the hospital, he fell and broke his hip. After surgery, he was transferred to a rehab hospital and is still there at this time.
Mistina Holt family
From Mistina: March of last year I was diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. I underwent six rounds of chemotherapy, single mastectomy and 28 radiation treatments. I will be undergoing reconstruction this summer to remove the tissue expander they placed during surgery and will continue to receive four more maintenance chemotherapy infusions as well as hormone therapy for at least five years.
We are a family of seven, with four kids still at home. Three of them are enrolled at St. Mary's and one attends the Special Education program through Alton School District for ASD.
We are so grateful for this blessing and appreciate all your hope, support and prayers to get us through this journey. We can never thank you enough. Hope is Stronger Than Fear
Megan Paulda
Megan Paulda, a 2011 graduate of SMS, was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma on March 16th, 2022. What she thought was just a virus moved in an unexpected direction. Her doctors are moving quickly, and her first chemotherapy treatment is scheduled for April 1st. Her oncologist is confident that Megan can be cured but the road to recovery will be long and tiresome. She will have a total of 12 chemotherapy treatments and follow up visits for a few years, but we are hopeful that she will make a full recovery! The day Megan was diagnosed was not lost on us – 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”.
